CITY OF CLERMONT PASSES ENERGY CHOICE ORDINANCE
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. (Dec. 11, 2024) – The Clermont City Council passed Ordinance No. 2024-043, better known as the “Energy Choice Ordinance,” 4-1 at its latest city council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The new regulation will ensure the installation of natural gas infrastructure in future real estate developments, providing residents with the option to choose safe, affordable and reliable natural gas from the start.
The ordinance aligns Clermont with neighboring cities of Apopka and Winter Garden, which enacted similar ordinances this year, marking another significant step toward expanding energy options and access for Central Florida residents.
“Tonight’s decision marked a major victory for residents of the city of Clermont,” said Brent E. Haywood, general manager and CEO of Lake Apopka Natural Gas District, which provides natural gas service in Winter Garden, Apopka, Clermont and surrounding communities. “This ordinance represents another important milestone toward increasing energy choice for Central Florida families. Now, new homeowners will have the freedom to select an energy option that best fits their needs, without the added expense of retrofitting gas infrastructure after purchase.”
“I’m proud of Clermont’s commitment to giving future homeowners access to modern, reliable energy solutions,” said Clermont Mayor Tim Murry, who serves on the Lake Apopka Natural Gas District Board of Directors. “This is about empowering our community to embrace energy options that enhance affordability, sustainability and resiliency.”
In Apopka, Clermont, Winter Garden and surrounding communities combined, families have been losing an average of over $127 million in annual fuel savings due to a previous lack of energy choice. Ordinance No. 2024-043 addresses this issue by allowing Clermont residents to avoid the extra costs of adding gas infrastructure to their homes after initial construction. Overall, Clermont residents and families now stand to save up to $1,100 annually with clean, affordable and reliable natural gas.
Lake Apopka Natural Gas District is committed to working with other neighboring municipalities to expand natural gas access and increase energy choice for its customers across the region. For more information about energy choice, visit www.langd.org.
