How Lake Apopka Natural Gas District was created—and why it still matters today.

Lake Apopka Natural Gas District was created to meet a growing community need at a time when private utilities could not. What began as a regional collaboration between local cities has grown into a publicly owned energy provider. Today, we serve tens of thousands of customers across Central Florida.

History of Lake Apopka Natural Gas District

Recognizing a Community Need

In the late 1950s, local officials from Apopka, Clermont, and Winter Garden recognized the region's growth potential as well as the need for a reliable, domestically produced energy source to support residents, businesses, and economic development. Rather than rely on a private utility, the cities collectively pursued a community-owned model that would allow the system to be financed, built, and operated for the benefit of the public.

Legislative Creation of the District

In 1959, the Florida Legislature formally established the Lake Apopka Natural Gas District as an independent special district of the State of Florida. This action gave the District the authority to plan, construct, and operate a natural gas distribution system across its service territory.

Building the System

Construction began in the early 1960s, with initial service commencing in 1963. By 1964, the system was in full operation, and within a year, the District had connected service to more than 2,000 customers. Today, LANGD serves more than 30,000 customers across Apopka, Clermont, Winter Garden, and surrounding communities.
