Understanding Your Energy Choice

Lake Apopka Natural Gas District and its member cities strongly believe that residents and businesses should have a choice when it comes to their energy options, allowing them to select what best fits their needs and long-term plans.

In growing communities, decisions made during development have lasting impacts. When natural gas infrastructure is installed at the time of construction, property owners retain access to multiple energy sources. Without infrastructure in place from the start, adding it later can be costly, disruptive, and sometimes impractical.

How natural gas works, where it comes from, and how it serves our community.

LANGD works with local governments, developers, and community leaders to support Energy Choice through planning and coordination. In several member cities, Energy Choice ordinances have established development standards that require natural gas infrastructure in qualifying new projects. These ordinances do not mandate appliance use or require connection, but instead preserve access so homeowners and businesses can choose the energy mix that best fits their needs.

Energy Choice ensures that infrastructure decisions are made at the most practical and cost-effective time: during construction. This approach helps communities avoid retrofit expenses, supports a balanced energy mix, and gives residents options as their needs change over time.

As a community-owned utility, LANGD views Energy Choice as a local solution that protects consumers and supports responsible growth. It reflects the same forward-thinking approach that led to the District’s creation more than 65 years ago: planning for the future while respecting the autonomy of the people we serve.

Energy Choice is not about telling customers what to choose—it’s about ensuring they have the freedom to make their own choices about the energy mix that’s right for their home or business.
