Know What to Look For

Learn how to spot the visible, audible, and olfactory signs of a potential natural gas leak near your home or business.

Look

Bubbling water in puddles or blowing dirt from the ground
Flames appearing at or above ground level
Dead vegetation or dry spots in otherwise healthy areas

Listen

Roaring, blowing, hissing, or unusual sounds at or near the ground, pipeline, meter, or appliance

Smell

Natural gas is odorless, but utilities add mercaptan—which smells like rotten eggs or sulfur—to help you detect leaks.
